Authentic ahadeeth on Islam's restrictions of women's freedom to travel
Shariah Islamic law mandates that women be restricted from the ability to travel at will, besides the fact that a woman is obligated to seek permission to leave the house, she is not allowed to travel for any reason without what is termed a Mahram accompanying her. A Mahram is a "guardian" who disposes the woman's affairs for her from among her relatives whom she can not marry. It is not a good idea for women to travel long distances alone, most would agree but these Shariah laws are more about control and keeping Muslim women in line then concern for safety. Both the Quran and Holy Bible teach that the man is leader of the home, but in vastly different ways. The Quran gives the reason for man's leadership in the home as " Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allaah has made one of them to excel the other", the Holy Bible gives an alternative reason that is rooted in the husbands duty to Love and self sacrifice for his Wife in imitation of Jesus Christ " Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, ".
Do not permit your women to travel, except that she has with her a mahram (Dhoo mahram)." [Reported by Aboo Hurayrah] [Related by Muslim]
"Do not permit for your women who believe in Allaah and the Last Day to travel a distance of three (days) except that she has with her a mahram (Dhoo Mahram)."
